Burkina Faso security meeting: unodc chief meets foreign minister
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, alongside Deputy Minister Camarade Bêbgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabre/Kabore, held a crucial meeting on June 5, 2026, with Dr. Anselme Siméon Sanou, the newly appointed head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Burkina Faso.
During the encounter, Dr. Sanou outlined the key priorities of his mandate, emphasizing the alignment between UNODC initiatives and Burkina Faso’s national security goals. These include combating organized crime, drug trafficking and consumption, arms smuggling, and terrorism, among other critical issues.
Strengthening regional security emerged as a central theme, with both parties underscoring the importance of coordinated efforts to tackle transnational threats. The UNODC representative reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting Burkina Faso’s government in implementing effective strategies to enhance safety and stability.
The Burkinabe Foreign Minister welcomed Dr. Sanou’s appointment, highlighting the significance of having a leader with deep local knowledge and expertise. He also urged collaboration between the UNODC and both civil society organizations and institutional stakeholders.
