Côte d’Ivoire backs Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara at un forum
The Côte d’Ivoire has once again voiced its unwavering support for Morocco‘s autonomy initiative to resolve the longstanding dispute over the Western Sahara region. During a recent regional seminar of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C24) held in Managua, the Ivorian delegation reiterated its backing for the proposal, which has garnered support from nearly 130 countries, including three permanent members of the UN Security Council.
The delegation emphasized that the initiative aligns with international law, the UN Charter, and relevant resolutions, including the landmark Security Council Resolution 2797 adopted in 2025. They highlighted its unique approach in addressing the specific needs of the Western Sahara population by empowering locals to participate actively in the region’s political and socio-economic governance.
Local governance and democratic participation strengthened
Under the autonomy plan, residents of the region have the opportunity to elect their local and national representatives through regular democratic processes within Morocco. The Ivorian delegation praised the inclusion of elected officials from the Western Sahara in the C24 discussions, underscoring the initiative’s commitment to inclusive representation.
Economic progress and development dividends
The delegation also noted the tangible economic benefits resulting from Morocco’s New Development Model for the southern provinces, launched in 2015. Massive investments have significantly improved living standards and raised the Human Development Index in the region, demonstrating the plan’s positive impact on the population’s well-being.
Human rights advancements recognized
In addition to political and economic progress, the Ivorian delegation commended Morocco for its efforts in promoting and protecting human rights. They highlighted the establishment of regional commissions of the National Human Rights Council in Laâyoune and Dakhla, as well as the ongoing cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The delegation concluded by praising Morocco‘s relentless pursuit of a mutually acceptable solution to the regional dispute. They described the autonomy initiative as a credible and pragmatic framework that grants the people of Western Sahara significant rights and responsibilities, fostering a future of stability and shared prosperity.
