Cotonou police dismantle vodjè drug ghetto, military officer ‘alòtrò’ sought
Authorities in Cotonou have delivered a significant blow to urban crime networks this week, executing a large-scale operation in the Vodjè district.

This targeted intervention led to the complete dismantling of a notorious ghetto, which had secretly harbored an Indian hemp trafficking network. Initial findings from the investigation indicate that this location served as both a crucial transit point and a consumption hub for users.
The raid resulted in the apprehension of several individuals at the site and the seizure of substantial equipment directly linked to the illicit trade. Investigations are actively continuing to identify and arrest all branches and persons involved in this criminal enterprise.
Military involvement in the drug network?
The case has taken a particularly serious turn with the Republican Police’s active search for a member of the Béninese armed forces. Known by the alias “Alòtrò” (a reference to the gecko), this military officer is the primary focus of investigators, who suspect him of direct complicity with the drug trafficking rings.
According to intelligence gathered by security services, the soldier did not frequent the ghetto for personal consumption. Instead, he had established a sophisticated extortion system, regularly collecting protection money from the dealers.
In exchange for these illicit payments, the military officer allegedly guaranteed them immunity from potential law enforcement raids, thereby betraying his oath to the nation.
