Deadly shooting near Mali’s national broadcaster in Bamako
Two young men killed in clash with military near ORTM
A deadly confrontation unfolded in Bamako early Thursday when two young men were fatally shot by Malian soldiers near the headquarters of the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision du Mali (ORTM). The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 AM local time in a high-security zone that also includes a prominent hotel in the capital.
According to military authorities, the two individuals riding a motorcycle allegedly attempted to breach security checkpoints surrounding the national broadcaster. However, conflicting accounts suggest the victims were seasonal workers heading to their construction site.
The shooting has sparked debate among Bamako residents about the military’s use of force, particularly in an area where checkpoints have become a daily reality for locals adjusting to heightened security measures.
Checkpoints under scrutiny after fatal shooting
The security barriers near the ORTM were set up in the early hours of the morning following coordinated attacks by armed groups in seven locations across Mali, including Bamako. Military officials claim the two motorcyclists ignored warning shots after breaching the first checkpoint, leading to their deaths.
One local resident, who asked to remain anonymous, defended the soldiers’ actions, stating that the area is closed to unauthorized traffic during security alerts: « Everyone knows that during these uncertain times, no one should attempt to enter this zone without authorization. If there are alerts, people must stop to avoid trouble. I believe the guards acted within their rights that day. »
However, not all residents agree with this assessment. Seyba, another Bamako resident, argued that the soldiers could have taken different measures to stop the motorcyclists without killing them: « I think the security forces should have aimed for the bike or shot at the riders’ legs to injure them and force a confession. Now that both are dead, we may never learn what truly happened. Even if they were suspected terrorists, this incident leaves us with more questions than answers. »
Local accounts gathered on-site suggest the victims were seasonal workers heading to their construction site, possibly unaware of the tightened security protocols in the area.
In response to the shooting, security around the ORTM complex has been further tightened. Similar measures have been implemented at military camps across Bamako, as well as at the Senou International Airport, where access is now restricted to travelers and authorized personnel only.
