This strategic move aims to translate his pan-Africanist vision into tangible public policies.

Intra-African trade has officially been designated as a cornerstone of Gabon’s economic strategy. Convening the Council of Ministers on June 25, President Oligui Nguema directed the government to immediately implement concrete measures designed to bolster commercial exchanges with African countries, focusing specifically on agricultural and food products.

This new direction signifies a pivotal phase in the economic agenda championed by the head of state. Since assuming leadership, President Oligui Nguema has consistently positioned regional integration and South-South cooperation as central tenets of his administration’s actions.

A presidential mandate for ministries

According to the official communiqué released after the Council of Ministers, the head of state underscored the imperative of favoring imports originating from African nations to strengthen the continent’s economies. “By promoting imports from African countries, especially in the realm of food products, we actively contribute to the economic integration of the continent and foster shared prosperity among our sister states,” President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema reiterated.

Beyond this declaration of principle, the President of the Republic demanded swift execution of this new policy. The Council of Ministers communiqué explicitly characterized this as “a firm directive,” from which he expects “immediate and resolute translation into concrete and measurable actions.”

A vision aligned with the AfCFTA

This includes reinvigorating discussions with the AfCFTA secretariat and actively promoting the local transformation of natural resources.
