Ivorian government reinforces zero-tolerance stance following brutal fgm incident in Bongouanou
Bongouanou – The Ivorian government has unequivocally reiterated its rigorous “zero-tolerance” policy against female genital mutilation (FGM). This strong reaffirmation comes in the wake of a deeply disturbing incident involving the violent circumcision of five young girls in Bongouanou.
The harrowing events unfolded during the night of Tuesday, June 30, 2026, within the Dioulakro quarter of Kangandi village, located in the Bongouanou commune. The victims, children aged between three and nine years, were subjected to an act described as being of “extreme violence.” This brutal practice resulted in significant hemorrhages, urinary retention, and profound psychological trauma for the minors.
Prompted by an anonymous report, dedicated teams from the regional directorate of Women, Family and Children, alongside the judicial protection service for children and youth (SPJEJ) and the Bongouanou police station, swiftly mobilized to rescue the affected children.
Following urgent medical care at the Bongouanou Departmental Public Hospital (EPHD), the five girls are now safe and secure. They have been placed in a specialized center under the protection of the ministry, where they are receiving comprehensive medical, psychological, and social support.
On the judicial front, law enforcement officers acted quickly, apprehending two suspects during their initial intervention. Competent authorities have been engaged to identify and ensure that all individuals involved in this heinous act, whether perpetrators or accomplices, are brought before the courts.
The ministry underscored that female genital mutilation remains a severe criminal offense under Ivorian legislation. This firm condemnation aligns with national commitments to eradicate gender-based violence (GBV), pledges that were notably renewed by First Lady Dominique Ouattara on June 13, 2026.
In light of the ongoing prevalence of this harmful practice, authorities are appealing to the public for heightened vigilance and the systematic reporting of any act or attempted act of genital mutilation.
