A formal complaint has been lodged with the Public Prosecutor at the Dakar High Court against Ousmane Sonko, currently serving as Speaker of the National Assembly and leader of the PASTEF party. The complaint targets the former Prime Minister following controversial statements he made during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters in Dakar.
Controversial remarks spark legal proceedings
The legal action was initiated by a collective of descendants of Serigne Touba, who allege that Sonko’s remarks about “dirty money entering the holy city of Touba” constitute a serious affront to the honor and dignity of the city and its residents. The complainants have requested a thorough investigation to verify the validity of these claims.
Demands for accountability and evidence
In their submission, the plaintiffs urge the prosecutor to summon Ousmane Sonko for clarification on his statements. They also demand that he provide concrete evidence supporting his assertions, should any exist, and call for a comprehensive inquiry to determine whether his remarks were based on fact or mere speculation.
The complainants, identifying themselves as Senegalese citizens, young intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and grandsons of Serigne Touba, assert that Sonko’s comments have tarnished the reputation of Touba and undermined the dignity of its people. They seek not only an apology but also legal measures to address what they describe as a deliberate attempt to defame a sacred institution.
