Marseille holds pre-season tour in Abidjan with government backing
Olympique de Marseille wrapped up a three-day pre-season tour in Abidjan on Saturday, July 18, following their arrival in Côte d’Ivoire three days earlier with a delegation of 80 people, including 24 players led by head coach Bruno Genesio.
The highlight of the stay was a friendly match on July 17 against Ligue 1 newcomers Yamoussoukro FC at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium, announced on the club’s official X account. Before the game, an unconventional opening event saw members of the Ivorian government meet with Marseille’s management and technical staff. The day prior, Olympians trained at the same venue, with striker Faris Moumbagna taking part in drills.
Government-backed sporting diplomacy
The visit wasn’t just about football. It fits into the Sublime Côte d’Ivoire partnership, renewed in April 2026 and extended through 2029. The deal, involving three ministries, is reported to bring Marseille around 3.275 billion FCFA (nearly €5 million) annually.
On July 14, three Ivorian ministers—Tourism’s Siandou Fofana, Culture’s Françoise Remarck, and Sports’ Adjé Silas Metch—held a joint press conference to rally support for the event. The Ministry of Tourism had earlier announced the club’s arrival on its X account, underscoring how Abidjan views the visit as a national showcase combining tourism, culture, and sports diplomacy rather than a routine pre-season stop.
The government’s involvement signals a broader strategy to leverage high-profile sporting events for international visibility. The partnership with Marseille, now extended until 2029, stands as one of the most visible symbols of this approach abroad.
Beyond the pitch: community engagement
The program extended beyond training sessions and matches. Players were scheduled to visit children in difficult situations in Abidjan as part of public outreach activities during the tour.
Yamoussoukro FC’s big stage
The friendly against Marseille gave Yamoussoukro FC, freshly promoted to Ligue 1, a rare spotlight. The club, based inland rather than in Abidjan, gained exposure usually reserved for the capital’s top teams.
New leadership marks international debut
Stéphane Richard, who officially took over as Marseille’s president on July 2, 2026, called the tour a key moment in the club’s summer preparation. His attendance alongside Genesio marked one of his first international appearances as the new leader.
The delegation returned to France on July 18, concluding a stay that blended athletic preparation, diplomatic engagement, and image-building for both sides.
