Swedish champions Mjällby delivered a masterclass in their maiden Champions League outing. The side dominated Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps with a commanding 3-0 home win at Strandvallen, marking a dream debut in European competition.
The historic triumph came in the first leg of the second qualifying round, with Mjällby’s players turning their Strandvallen stadium into a fortress. The Swedes struck three times in the opening 31 minutes, with Fijian forward Aki Samuelsen opening his account with two well-taken strikes (18′, 24′) before Jacob Bergström doubled the advantage (31′).
Samuelsen had a golden opportunity to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, but his effort was saved by the Lincoln goalkeeper. Despite the miss, Mjällby maintained their composure and controlled the remainder of the match without adding to their tally.
Road to the next round passes through Gibraltar
The return leg awaits the Swedish side in Gibraltar next Tuesday at 18:00. The victors of this tie will advance to face either Georgia’s Iberia 1999 or Slovakia’s Slovan Bratislava in the third qualifying round. The latter secured a 2-0 away win on Tuesday evening.
