Morocco Now France’s Top Diplomatic Priority in the Maghreb
The French government has shifted its diplomatic focus to Morocco, with Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s upcoming two-day visit marking a significant shift.
Lecornu’s visit, scheduled for July 15-16, will be his first international trip since taking office. He will meet with his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch, and engage in bilateral talks.
The French government has emphasized its commitment to strengthening ties with Morocco, citing the importance of cooperation on security and judicial matters. Lecornu has praised the ‘excellent level’ of police and judicial cooperation between the two countries.
During his visit, Lecornu will also engage in high-level talks with Moroccan officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has welcomed the presence of a delegation of Moroccan parliamentarians at the French National Assembly.
French Deputy Pierre Jouvet has described Morocco as a ‘geopolitical partner’ essential to France and Europe, emphasizing the need to strengthen relations between the two countries.
Lecornu’s visit underscores the growing importance of Morocco in French foreign policy, as Paris seeks to reassert its influence in the Maghreb region.
