N’Djamena’s national museum celebrates chadian cultural heritage with inaugural night of museums
In a vibrant celebration marking International Museum Day, the Cultural Heritage House of Chad, under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourist Development, Culture and Handicrafts, proudly hosted the very first edition of the Night of Museums in N’Djamena on Monday, May 18, 2026. The National Museum of Chad served as the animated venue for this pioneering event, dedicated to showcasing the nation’s rich cultural tapestry.
From 8 PM onwards, a lively and culturally immersive atmosphere enveloped the museum grounds. Guests were greeted at the entrance by the dynamic performances of the National Ballet of Chad, whose colorful traditional dances offered an immediate and captivating introduction to the country’s profound choreographic legacy.
“It’s truly spectacular to experience traditional Chadian dance through the Night of Museums. I’ve only just stepped inside to explore the wonders of the National Museum, but I’m already mesmerized by these artistic displays,” shared Anne Marie-Thérèse, a visitor visibly enchanted by the evening’s commencement.
The nocturnal exploration was thoughtfully organized into various sections, allowing attendees to freely wander through the permanent exhibition spaces. Visitors engaged with a diverse and interactive program, which included guided demonstrations highlighting exquisite art objects, traditional tales passionately narrated by griots and museum guides, documentary screenings illuminating Chad’s material and intangible heritage, alongside a series of captivating artistic performances.
For Mbaibaidoh John Innocent, the director of the National Ballet, this initiative represents a truly exceptional opportunity to promote Chadian traditions.
“Our traditional dances are an integral part of our intangible heritage. We adorned the stage with objects our ancestors used in their daily lives. This is a unique chance for the younger generation to discover these historically significant items. We sincerely hope the Night of Museums can be held at least three times a year, as it’s an unparalleled moment for celebrating and valuing our culture.”
The event also saw the participation of the Ambassador of France to Chad and their delegation, underscoring the international interest in initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting Chadian cultural heritage.
