During a significant press briefing this Tuesday, Ousmane Sonko provided crucial revelations, meticulously outlining the precise events that led to his political divergence from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. His statement put an end to weeks of intense speculation regarding their relationship.

Sonko recounted that it was President Faye who initiated their decisive meeting at the Presidential Palace. The President expressed his view that their political partnership could no longer continue, citing several public pronouncements by Sonko that he deemed problematic. In response to this ultimatum, the leader of PASTEF asserted his proactive stance, stating, “I facilitated his decision by assuring him of my compliance. I told him that if he wished to dismiss me, he should simply take responsibility and proceed.”

Sonko further disclosed that, at an earlier point, he had personally suggested to President Faye that he would step down from the government to assume leadership of the National Assembly, while pledging his continued support for the administration. This proposition, however, did not materialize.

Evidently resolved not to bear the onus of this separation, Sonko aimed to clarify the facts for the public, asserting, “I could not take responsibility for this parting of ways.”
