Senegal president diomaye faye launches consultations with lawmakers and pm sonko to address reforms
Senegal: President Diomaye Faye initiates nationwide consultations while Prime Minister Sonko addresses lawmakers

A shift in national dialogue tradition has begun in Senegal as President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announces a ten-day consultation period with civil society leaders, political parties, religious figures, and traditional authorities.
This move replaces the annual May 28 dialogue day established in 2016, signaling a new governance approach. “A clear statement of the President’s commitment to inclusive dialogue,” notes Maurice Soundieck Dione, political science professor at the University Gaston Berger in Saint-Louis. While Faye aims to make consultation the cornerstone of his administration, critics argue the process lacks transparency, particularly regarding the controversial electoral law reforms and upcoming constitutional changes.
Prime Minister Sonko’s address to lawmakers
In parallel, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko is set to address members of parliament on May 22, marking his fifth scheduled session of parliamentary questions. The timing raises questions about coordination between the two leaders. “A shared calendar would have been ideal,” suggests analyst Assane Samb. However, observers see this as reflective of a broader dynamic in Senegalese politics where “both leaders vie for influence within the executive,” according to Maurice Soundieck Dione.
