Senegal’s political shift: sonko and faye’s alliance crumbles
Following his dismissal by President Faye, Ousmane Sonko has been elected to lead the National Assembly, positioning him as the head of state’s principal political adversary.
Once inseparable political allies, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko now find themselves in a prominent rivalry. During Senegal’s 2024 presidential campaign, their Wolof slogan, “Diomaye Moy Sonko” (meaning “Diomaye is Sonko”), perfectly encapsulated their profound unity. Following his removal from the Prime Minister’s office by President Faye on May 22, Sonko swiftly reclaimed his seat as a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly. Demonstrating his enduring political influence, the dynamic leader subsequently secured the position of Speaker of the Assembly. This new role not only establishes him as the second-highest-ranking official in the Senegalese state and the constitutional successor to President Faye but also firmly positions him as the President’s leading political contender.
