UNESCO joins Mali’s 27th Environment Fortnight in Bamako

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) delegation in Mali played a pivotal role in the official launch of the 27th edition of the Environment Fortnight, held in Bamako on Saturday, June 6, 2026. The event brought together government leaders, environmental officials from the Sahel Alliance countries (Burkina Faso and Niger), national institutions, technical partners, financial backers, civil society representatives, private sector actors, and media professionals.

The ceremony was presided over by the Mali’s Minister of State for Economy and Finance, Alousséni Sanou, acting on behalf of the Prime Minister and Head of Government. The delegation from UNESCO was led by Ali Mohamed Sinane, the Organization’s Representative in Mali.

Mobilizing for climate action and sustainable land use

This year’s edition, running from June 5 to 15, 2026, focuses on two critical themes:

  • « Climate crisis and solutions for a safer, more resilient, and sustainable future » – aligning with World Environment Day;
  • « Pastures: recognize, respect, restore » – echoing the International Day for Combating Desertification and Drought.

A collaborative push for environmental stewardship

The Environment Fortnight aims to consolidate national initiatives that enhance community awareness about protecting natural resources and fostering sustainable environmental practices. By participating in this event, UNESCO reaffirms its commitment to supporting Mali in raising awareness, promoting best environmental practices, and driving concrete actions for sustainable, resilient development.

The campaign’s dual focus underscores the urgency of addressing climate change while emphasizing the importance of sustainable land management—a vital step in combating land degradation and desertification across the region.
