VfB Stuttgart secures Champions League berth after thrilling Frankfurt draw

VfB Stuttgart officially punched its ticket to the UEFA Champions League for the upcoming season, finishing fourth in the Bundesliga after a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, May 16.

With a crucial 2-2 stalemate achieved on Saturday afternoon in Frankfurt, Stuttgart cemented its fourth-place finish in the Bundesliga standings. This pivotal result granted the Swabian club the final German entry into Europe’s most prestigious club competition, joining giants like Bayern Munich (1st), Borussia Dortmund (2nd), and RB Leipzig (3rd).

The battle for the coveted fourth spot was intense, with Stuttgart fending off strong challenges from Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen. In their decisive encounter against Eintracht Frankfurt, Sebastian Hoeness’s squad initially took a commanding lead with goals from Chema Andrès in the 10th minute and Nikolas Nartey just before halftime in the 45th minute plus four. However, the Eagles mounted a second-half comeback, with Jonathan Burkhardt converting two penalties to level the score.

Despite conceding the lead, Stuttgart’s 62 points proved sufficient. Hoffenheim, with 61 points, suffered a 4-0 defeat away at Mönchengladbach, while Bayer Leverkusen, on 59 points, was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Hamburg. This remarkable achievement marks the seventh time in the club’s illustrious history that Stuttgart has qualified for the top-tier European club competition (encompassing both the Champions League and its predecessor, the European Cup).

At the opposite end of the Bundesliga table, the relegation picture also became clear. Heidenheim faced a 2-0 home loss against Mainz, and St. Pauli similarly fell 3-1 on their own turf to Wolfsburg. Both Heidenheim and St. Pauli, finishing with 29 points, will now drop down to the second division. Meanwhile, Wolfsburg, who secured 16th place, will enter a playoff battle against one of the 2. Bundesliga’s third-placed teams: Elversberg, Hannover, or Paderborn, to retain their top-flight status.

Elsewhere in the league, already crowned German champions for a record 35th time, Bayern Munich delivered a dominant performance, thrashing Cologne 5-1. The Bavarian giants concluded their Bundesliga campaign with an astounding 122 goals, with prolific striker Harry Kane contributing 36 of those in the league alone (and an incredible 59 across all competitions), including a hat-trick against Cologne (10th, 13th, 69th minutes).
