40 nations back Morocco’s Sahara sovereignty at geneva human rights council
40 nations reaffirm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over western Sahara at geneva human rights council
Forty countries publicly endorsed Morocco’s territorial integrity during the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva this Tuesday.
The strong international backing came through a joint statement delivered by Morocco’s UN Ambassador Omar Zniber in Geneva, emphasizing that the Sahara issue remains anchored in the UN-led political track under Security Council guidance.
The declaration highlighted Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a credible and pragmatic foundation for achieving a lasting political solution to the decades-long conflict. It also reiterated support for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which calls for restarting the political process with all involved parties.
Supporting nations praised Morocco’s autonomy proposal and commended its commitment to integrating residents from the Tindouf camps while ensuring their rights match those of other Moroccan citizens. They also recognized Morocco’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, describing it as a positive commitment to advancing and safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms.
The statement noted that the opening of consulates by multiple countries in Laayoune and Dakhla signals growing international recognition of Morocco’s position while fostering development, investment, and regional cooperation in the southern provinces. The group concluded by stressing that resolving the conflict would serve as a catalyst for integration and development across African and Arab regions.
