AES alliance in the Sahel: security progress and regional integration

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is steadily reinforcing its strategic achievements across multiple critical domains. This progress was highlighted by Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, during a recent broadcast interview.

military cooperation and unified defense framework

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—core members of the AES—have elevated their military collaboration by establishing a unified force and a joint operational headquarters in Niamey. This command structure is designed to serve as the backbone for coordinated security operations across the region, enhancing rapid response and operational synergy.

diplomatic cohesion and international representation

The ministers emphasized advances in unified diplomacy, including the adoption of a shared diplomatic passport and improved coordination among member states’ embassies. The ultimate goal is to present a cohesive front in global forums, projecting unified positions on shared challenges and opportunities.

economic integration initiatives

Beyond defense and diplomacy, the AES is accelerating economic integration. Plans include the launch of a regional investment bank to fund critical development projects across member territories. Additionally, a network of shared media outlets—spanning television, radio, and print—is being developed to strengthen institutional communication and counter misinformation campaigns targeting the Sahel.

sovereignty and international recognition

The AES leadership has reiterated that decisions regarding international recognition and partnerships remain sovereign choices for each member state, ensuring autonomy in foreign policy while maintaining collective solidarity.

solidarity after a national loss

A high-level AES delegation led by General Célestin Simporé traveled to Bamako to convey condolences following the passing of Malian Army General Sadio Camara. The delegation was received by Mali’s transitional President, General Assimi Goïta, and delivered messages of solidarity from Burkina Faso and Niger.

During the visit, the officials honored General Camara as a pivotal figure in Sahelian military cooperation and reaffirmed the AES’s unwavering commitment to combating armed groups. The delegation emphasized that the alliance remains resolute in intensifying efforts to neutralize terrorist threats across the region.
