Barcelona’s Pedri ignites transfer speculation for Julian Alvarez amid PSG interest
Paris Saint-Germain’s long-standing pursuit of Julian Alvarez appears far from over, despite the striker’s move to Atletico Madrid two years ago. However, the Parisian club now faces a new hurdle: FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants seem poised to challenge PSG’s latest efforts to secure the Argentine international, a development that would undoubtedly delight Barcelona midfielder Pedri.

The Julian Alvarez transfer saga has captivated the early summer transfer window, which officially commenced on June 15th and will conclude on September 1st. The 26-year-old Argentine international is currently representing his nation in his second World Cup campaign on American soil. Despite being contractually bound to Atletico Madrid until 2030, the Colchoneros striker has no intentions of returning to the Spanish capital once the curtain falls on the 2026 World Cup.
“I believe a transfer is what’s best for everyone”
On Monday, Argentina successfully secured their spot in the World Cup 2026 round of 16 after defeating Austria 2-0. In the mixed zone following the match, Julian Alvarez chose to publicly express his desire for a move elsewhere, hinting strongly at a preference for FC Barcelona. “This isn’t the moment to discuss it, but I also can’t hide my feelings; I strive to be an honest person. I’ve spoken with the people at Atlético de Madrid, and I believe a transfer is what’s best for everyone. I want to fulfill my dream.”
“I hope this transfer can happen, and if so, all the better”
This revelation spells unwelcome news for PSG, who, much like in the summer of 2024 before Alvarez’s move to Atletico Madrid, continue to monitor the rojiblanco striker’s situation closely. Adding to PSG’s challenge, Julian Alvarez is already being warmly welcomed at FC Barcelona. This sentiment is clearly echoed in the remarks made by Pedri during his interview with RTVE. “A transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona? I think many things would need to align for that to happen. I don’t want to interfere with the club’s affairs, nor those of a player. It’s true that I adore Julian as a player, and I’ve always said I want the best players at Barça. I hope this transfer can happen, and if so, all the better.” The FC Barcelona midfielder has unequivocally initiated the transfer battle. It remains to be seen whether Paris Saint-Germain will make their move, either publicly or behind the scenes, to tip the scales in their favor in the race for Alvarez’s signature.
