Benin strengthens medical emergency response with 600 new oxygen concentrators
The healthcare landscape in Benin has reached a significant milestone in its development. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Minister of Health, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, officially received a shipment of 600 state-of-the-art oxygen concentrators. This initiative is designed to bolster the emergency intervention capabilities of 23 medical facilities throughout the nation.
Advanced technology to preserve lives
Acquired through UNICEF with financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this medical equipment represents an investment exceeding $205,450 USD, or approximately 116 million CFA francs. The units are “10LPM single flow” concentrators, which are specialized devices capable of delivering a steady and vital supply of oxygen to patients suffering from respiratory failure.
This massive deployment is strategically directed toward 23 hospitals and clinics located within the departments of Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.
A strategic move against maternal and infant mortality
For Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin, this equipment delivery is far more than a simple technical update. It represents a core element of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at lowering maternal, neonatal, and infant mortality rates.
“Ensuring the availability of oxygen is of paramount importance,” the Minister declared during the formal ceremony. “These tools are a concrete demonstration of our promise to provide every citizen, regardless of their location, with fair access to high-standard medical treatment.”
Strong international cooperation for public health
The handover ceremony took place in the presence of the Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Wei Zhang, and the UNICEF Resident Representative, Mr. Ousmane Niang. The Ambassador highlighted the excellent diplomatic relations between China and Benin, confirming Beijing’s dedication to ongoing support for the country’s healthcare sector.
The UNICEF representative noted that these devices, made possible by the generosity of individual donors in China, will significantly enhance the resilience of the Beninese health system during critical emergencies. This upgrade to the operational capacity of health structures serves to reinforce the government’s continuous efforts to modernize the national technical platform and deliver more effective public health services.
