Protest in Ouagadougou after imam arrest

In mid-April, an imam from Bobo Dioulasso, Mahmoud Barro, was similarly detained under contentious circumstances. Earlier, on March 31, cyberactivist Mahamadi Baguian—a government supporter—died following his arrest by Ouagadougou police.

The arrest of Imam Mohamed Kindo on Tuesday afternoon joins this troubling pattern. All three cases stem from a single controversial bill: a government proposal to regulate religious freedoms, specifically banning worship practices in public spaces such as government offices, hospitals, and military barracks.

The bill, approved by the Council of Ministers on March 19, has ignited fierce debate, particularly among Sunni Muslims, with influential Imam Kindo as one of its leading critics. His vocal opposition led to a dramatic arrest on the eve of Eid al-Adha, triggering mass protests as hundreds of worshippers took to the streets of the capital. Clashes with security forces erupted, marked by tear gas deployments and aggressive crowd dispersal tactics in downtown areas.
