Chad secures key urbanization deals at bakou forum
The Minister of Territorial Planning, Urban Development and Housing recently shared updates from Chad’s delegation to the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The briefing, held at the ministry’s headquarters, brought together officials, including the first deputy mayor of N’Djamena, representatives from SOPROFIM, and ONU-Habitat delegates, to discuss outcomes of the mission.
The forum addressed pressing urban challenges, with a focus on sustainable housing, resilient city planning, and climate change adaptation. Chad’s active participation enhanced the country’s profile on international urban development platforms and fostered dialogue on policies shaping Africa’s urban future. A dedicated pavilion showcased the nation’s urban and housing initiatives to global stakeholders.
One of the most significant results was the announcement of an official visit by the Executive Director of ONU-Habitat, scheduled for September 9–11, 2026. The visit will assess urban realities in Chad and review several government-submitted projects aimed at improving living conditions in cities.
Additionally, Chad has been included in the top ten countries eligible for the United Nations Green Fund, thanks to a proposal backed by Kenya. This eligibility could unlock substantial financing for urban resilience projects, particularly those targeting flood mitigation in vulnerable areas.
During the forum, Chad engaged in strategic discussions with Kenya and Morocco to explore new collaborations in urbanization, social housing, and informal settlement upgrading. Potential joint missions and knowledge-sharing initiatives are under consideration to strengthen ties between the partner nations.
The minister emphasized that these developments mark a turning point for Chad, offering tangible pathways to convert international support into impactful, large-scale urban projects that benefit communities nationwide.
By taking part in WUF13, Chad reaffirmed its commitment to fostering inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient urban growth, aligning with the national vision outlined by the President of the Republic, His Excellency the Marshal.
