China’s 1770-ton rice donation strengthens food security in Chad
China delivers 1770 tons of rice to Chad, reinforcing national food security amid climate and economic challenges through sustained humanitarian support.
A historic gesture of solidarity
N’Djamena, June 16, 2026 – In response to pressing climate and economic pressures, the People’s Republic of China has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to Chad by delivering a substantial shipment of 1,770 tons of rice. The official handover ceremony took place today at the Radisson Blu hotel, presided over by Minister of Social Action Zara Mahamat Issa.
Beyond food aid: a partnership built on trust
During the event, the minister highlighted that this contribution transcends mere material assistance. It reflects the deep friendship and robust partnership between the two nations, rooted in mutual respect and shared solidarity. Drawing from a Chinese proverb, she emphasized the vital importance of this aid for vulnerable communities, including displaced families, refugees, and those affected by recurring crises. “In times of hardship, a single grain of rice is worth its weight in gold,” she remarked.
Strengthening national resilience
Ahmat Mahamat Kosseï, Director-General of Chad’s National Food Security Office (ONASA), conveyed profound gratitude for this timely donation, which arrives as the government, led by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, intensifies efforts to combat food insecurity. He confirmed that this latest support will bolster existing initiatives aimed at safeguarding families facing hunger and malnutrition.
Transparent distribution and long-term commitment
ONASA has pledged to ensure the rice is distributed transparently, efficiently, and equitably. The agency noted that this marks the latest in a series of generous contributions from China, including 5,000 tons in 2014 and 2017, 5,966 tons in 2019, and additional wheat and rice donations in 2022 and 2025. Each delivery reinforces the shared vision of building resilience against food vulnerabilities while fostering sustainable development.
China’s holistic approach to aid
Wang Xining, China’s Ambassador to Chad, explained that recent years have seen Chad grapple with compounded challenges: regional conflicts displacing thousands, extreme weather disrupting agriculture, and economic strains straining food supplies. “The Chinese government and people stand in solidarity with Chad,” he stated. “Each year, we provide cereal aid valued at nearly two billion CFA francs.”
Beyond immediate relief, Ambassador Wang emphasized China’s broader strategy: empowering local communities through technical expertise. He cited the Chinese saying, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him to fish and you feed him for life.” To this end, Chinese agricultural missions are collaborating with Chadian farmers to introduce high-yield crop varieties and modern farming techniques.
The Ambassador underscored Chad’s untapped agricultural potential, highlighting abundant water resources, abundant sunshine, fertile soil, and a hardworking population. He noted that 2026 represents a pivotal year, with aligned national development plans and China’s announcement of zero tariffs on imports from African nations with diplomatic ties—further facilitating trade and cooperation.
The ceremony concluded with a visit to the Chagoua FDAR warehouse in the 7th arrondissement of N’Djamena, where the rice shipment is being prepared for distribution.
