French football league sanctions Nantes for pitch invasion

The French Football League handed down a stern punishment to FC Nantes on Wednesday following a chaotic final day of Ligue 1 action that saw Toulouse escape with a 0-0 draw after the match was abandoned due to fan unrest.

The disciplinary body of France’s top football division delivered its verdict on the tumultuous final match of the season between Nantes and Toulouse. After ultras stormed the pitch on May 17 to protest their team’s relegation to Ligue 2, the Ligue de Football Professionnel imposed a full stadium closure for one of Nantes’ upcoming home games.

The disciplinary panel also confirmed the match score of 0-0 as final, despite the abandonment at the time of the pitch invasion.

In addition to the closed-door match, the Loire stand — the source of the disturbances — will remain shut for two more Ligue 1 fixtures.

Nantes avoided an even harsher penalty, as officials considered but ultimately rejected docking points for the Canaries’ upcoming Ligue 2 campaign.
