Gabon and Togo forge strategic constitutional court alliance at Libreville summit
A high-level diplomatic and judicial meeting took place at the Presidential Palace in Libreville on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema received Professor Djobo-Babakane Coulibaley, head of Togo’s Constitutional Court, alongside Gabon’s own Constitutional Court president, Dieudonné Aba’a Owono. This encounter marks a decisive step toward closer ties between the judicial institutions of both nations.
Beyond the formal courtesies extended to the head of state, the visit carried a much broader ambition. Professor Coulibaley used the platform to praise the strong historical friendship between Libreville and Lomé, while laying the groundwork for deeper technical cooperation.
Discussions quickly turned to concrete initiatives. The two delegations agreed to establish regular consultations, creating a permanent mechanism to share experiences and transfer best practices. This will enhance the effectiveness of each court in fulfilling its constitutional duties.
Modernising institutions to strengthen the rule of law
Responding to the quality of the proposals, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema expressed great satisfaction with the depth of the discussions. For the head of state, this partnership is not incidental; it directly aligns with his political vision focused on modernising republican institutions and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
The Gabonese leader also stressed that developing such synergies across the continent is essential. By fostering these strategic alliances with African peers, Gabon aims not only to optimise its own structures but also to assert its leadership and enhance the visibility of its legal institutions on both continental and international stages.
