The President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, landed in Banjul, Gambia’s capital, yesterday to begin a four-day working and goodwill visit. He was warmly received by Gambia’s President Adama Barrow, with whom he held a private meeting followed by bilateral talks at the official residence. The discussions focused on reviewing existing cooperation areas and exploring new avenues for partnership. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral ties and foster sustainable economic development between the two nations. A second meeting is scheduled for today.

Strengthening ties between Libreville and Banjul

This visit aims to reinforce the strategic partnership between Gabon and Gambia. During his stay, President Oligui Nguema will tour key government infrastructure and historical landmarks. Scheduled stops include the National Food and Drug Quality Control Laboratory in Brusubi, the University of Gambia, the National Emergency Treatment Center in Farato, and the Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau.

Economic ties and future prospects

The visit also includes a state banquet hosted by President Barrow in honor of his Gabonese counterpart. Gambia’s economy, primarily driven by tourism, agriculture, and re-export trade, has shown robust growth with a real GDP increase of 6.1%, largely supported by a thriving services sector.

This state visit is part of a broader regional tour that President Oligui Nguema is undertaking across West Africa to strengthen diplomatic and economic engagements.
