Legal action taken against Ousmane Sonko over touba remarks

The controversy surrounding Ousmane Sonko’s statements about Touba has escalated into a legal dispute. A concerned citizen, identifying as a descendant of Serigne Touba and a Senegalese entrepreneur, has formally filed a complaint with the Prosecutor of the Republic at the Dakar High Court of First Instance.

In his submission dated July 14, 2026, Serigne Modou Maroun Niang argues that the remarks attributed to the PASTEF leader severely tarnish the sacred reputation and dignity of Touba, a city synonymous with faith, integrity, and the legacy of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. The complaint specifically refers to a public statement allegedly made by Sonko, in which he claimed that “dirty money has entered the holy city of Touba.”

The petition calls for an immediate judicial inquiry, requesting Sonko’s testimony to clarify his remarks and provide supporting evidence. Additionally, the complainant seeks thorough investigations to verify the validity of the accusations. If substantiated, the filing party demands that appropriate legal action be pursued under Senegalese law, including charges of defamation, dissemination of false information, or other applicable offenses.

Serigne Modou Maroun Niang claims to possess multiple forms of evidence, including video recordings, transcripts of the controversial statements, and media publications. This legal move follows a period of intense political debate surrounding Sonko’s remarks and could lead to further judicial proceedings if the prosecution decides to act on the complaint.
