Mali has been embroiled for years in a profound security and political crisis, a protracted period of instability that continues to challenge the nation’s future.
The security crisis is exacerbated by relentless assaults from jihadist and separatist armed groups. A particularly notable incident occurred on April 25, when the capital, Bamako, was targeted in an attack that tragically claimed the life of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, among others.

This city had been under the control of rebel groups since 2012.
