Morocco-us military cooperation takes shape with new tan-tan training hub
Morocco and the United States are advancing a groundbreaking military partnership with the establishment of a multidomain training and innovation center in Tan-Tan. This strategic facility, known as the African Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC), is designed to enhance military capabilities through cutting-edge technologies and foster seamless cooperation between African and Western defense partners.
According to General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, Morocco is uniquely positioned to bring this vision to life swiftly. “Our existing infrastructure and skilled workforce provide the perfect foundation to transition from concept to operational reality,” he stated, emphasizing the Kingdom’s reliability as an industrial and strategic partner for the U.S.
a three-pillar strategy for modern defense
The AMTEC will operate around three core components:
- Multidomain Training Area (MDTA): A high-tech training zone enabling forces to prepare for complex operations across diverse environments, including full-spectrum electromagnetic operations.
- Drone Academy (MTDA): A dedicated institution focused on training African operators in small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), with a strong emphasis on counterterrorism operations in West Africa.
- Innovation and Experimentation Center: A dynamic hub for testing emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced communications. Special attention will be given to cost-effective, scalable solutions tailored to Africa’s unique operational challenges.
beyond defense: economic and technological synergies
While the primary focus is military readiness, the AMTEC project also holds significant economic and technological promise. By integrating industrial and academic stakeholders, the initiative aims to cultivate an innovation ecosystem centered on defense technologies. This could pave the way for breakthroughs in wireless and detection technologies while supporting development in remote regions.
General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, highlighted the initiative’s broader potential: “This represents a major opportunity for U.S. and African defense industries and academic institutions to collaborate and develop solutions tailored to emerging threats.”
testbed for future operations
One of the first major milestones for the AMTEC will be the African Lion 2027 exercise, an annual event hosted in Morocco that already serves as a proving ground for integrating advanced technologies into real-world operations.
