A new pediatric unit in Koutiala, Mali boosts child healthcare
Explore Koutiala in southern Mali, where we built a state-of-the-art pediatric unit to combat child mortality in the region.
Since 2009, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has operated a pediatric program in Koutiala, southeastern Mali, aiming to reduce child mortality through preventive and curative care. To enhance treatment for young patients, MSF constructed a new pediatric unit. We documented the year-long construction process of this vital facility.
The malaria burden in Koutiala significantly contributes to child mortality. Malnourished children suffering from malaria face severe health risks, creating a dangerous cycle where illness leads to poor nutrition and vice versa. MSF addresses this by providing free, high-quality hospital care for children with severe illnesses and expanding pediatric services in Koutiala district villages to prevent complications.
The new pediatric unit consolidates all patient care in one modern facility with improved equipment.
During peak malaria season (typically June-December, depending on rainfall) and the hunger gap (October-November), the Koutiala hospital’s pediatric and malnutrition wards admit up to 1,000 children supported by MSF.
