Niger politics: Maïmouna Sène criticizes Ousmane Sonko’s judicial populism
In a sharp rebuke delivered at the National Assembly, former legislator Maïmouna Sène, a key figure in the Alliance Pour la République (APR), leveled harsh criticism at Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. She accused him of exploiting legal proceedings as a political tool rather than addressing the nation’s pressing economic challenges.
The APR strategist argued that while accountability is essential for governance, it should not be weaponized to distract from the Senegalese government’s failure to curb inflation, stimulate job creation, or revitalize the economy. According to Sène, citizens prioritize tangible results over political posturing and witch hunts.
« If you possess evidence, present it to the courts and allow justice to unfold without interference, » she asserted. « The Senegalese people entrusted you with leadership not to dwell on the past or settle scores, but to halt rising prices, generate employment, and reignite economic growth. Practice what you preach—start by scrutinizing your own ranks before targeting others. »
Sène’s remarks underscore escalating tensions between the ruling party and the opposition, with calls for action rather than rhetoric dominating the discourse.
