OL faces early Ligue 1 challenge as LFP declines match postponement request
Olympique Lyonnais set to kick off Ligue 1 season against Toulouse FC
The Ligue 1 campaign for Olympique Lyonnais (OL) begins with a tough early test away to Toulouse FC on August 22, but the club’s request to postpone this fixture has been firmly declined by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP).
With the potential for an intense schedule ahead, OL’s leadership sought to shift the Toulouse match to accommodate a tight Champions League qualifying playoff. If the Rhône-Alpes club progresses past their final qualifying round, they could face two successive matches—one in Europe and one in Ligue 1—within a matter of days.
In their formal petition, OL highlighted the precedent set by Paris Saint-Germain last season, when the capital club secured multiple postponements to better prepare for European fixtures. The argument centered on safeguarding player welfare and competitive fairness.
Champions League playoff looms for OL in late August
Despite presenting a compelling case, the LFP’s governing body rejected OL’s proposal outright. Officials cited the need to maintain the integrity of the league’s televised broadcast schedule from the season’s very first matchday.
The decision delivers an immediate scheduling setback for new manager Paulo Fonseca and his squad. With Champions League qualification hanging in the balance, the Gones face a punishing schedule as they aim to secure their place in Europe’s premier club competition.
