The Gabonese government and the European Union (EU) convened yesterday at the Omar Bongo Ondimba Congress Palace in the Cité de la Démocratie for the second session of their strategic partnership dialogue. Co-chaired by Vice-President of the Government Hermann Immongault and the EU Ambassador to Gabon, Cécile Abadie, the meeting followed the first session held in October 2024.

According to Mr. Immongault, this dialogue reinforces the foundations of the Samoa Agreement, the legal framework governing relations between the EU and African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries. He emphasized the need for a “balanced, action-oriented partnership focused on tangible outcomes in public policies and investments.”

The discussions covered four key areas: political reforms and governance, economic prospects, environmental sustainability and natural resource management, as well as regional cooperation.

At the conclusion of the talks, both parties commended the institutional reforms implemented during Gabon’s transition period and exchanged perspectives on human rights and fundamental freedoms. “No topic was off-limits,” Mr. Immongault stated, noting that the exchanges helped “clarify all uncertainties.”

Economic discussions centered on Gabon’s growth potential, ongoing structural reforms, business climate enhancements, and strategies to boost foreign investment. The EU’s Global Gateway initiative was also highlighted as a key framework for future collaboration.

Environmental sustainability took center stage, with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to sustainable forest management and exploring cooperation in sustainable fisheries, renewable energy, and waste management.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of their dedication to multilateralism, emphasizing common ground on regional and international challenges—particularly maritime security and regional integration.

Moving forward, Gabon and the EU aim to deepen their relationship by continuing consultations on jointly identified priorities, fostering an atmosphere of openness and mutual trust.
