A founding member’s break from Pastef
Ibrahima Diam Sow, who served as Pastef’s first coordinator in Méri and led the Patriotic Movement of Subjected Citizens (MPI), has officially severed ties with the party led by Ousmane Sonko. His exit marks a significant development in the department’s political dynamics.
Disagreements over party direction
As a former communications lead for Pastef in Podor, Ibrahima Diam Sow cited deep-seated disagreements with the party’s current trajectory. He highlighted what he described as “numerous contradictions” and criticized an internal atmosphere he likened to a “dictatorship of thought.” These factors, he stated, made it impossible for him to continue supporting the party’s evolving project.
New allegiance to Diomaye Faye’s coalition
In his announcement, Ibrahima Diam Sow pledged his support to the Diomaye-Président coalition, emphasizing his commitment to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s agenda. His reasoning hinges on a guiding principle: “The nation comes before the party.”
Once a key figure in Pastef’s early expansion in northern Senegal, Ibrahima Diam Sow played a crucial role in establishing the party’s presence in the region. His contributions included organizing Ousmane Sonko’s first visit to the area in 2017 and collaborating with local leaders like Ibrahima Sy in mobilizing support during campaigns.
His departure signals a notable shift in Podor’s political alliances and raises questions about the future cohesion of Pastef’s northern stronghold.
