Senegal constitutional revision approved, Sonko challenges Faye
On Monday, June 29, 2026, Senegal’s National Assembly overwhelmingly approved a bill to revise the constitution. Despite a boycott by the opposition, all 129 Pastef deputies present in the chamber voted in favour. Following the vote, National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko directly addressed President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, highlighting their differences on specific parts of the text.
“We still hope. Because it will never be too late to return to what is essential, to what makes his political soul. I don’t think he could have changed so much in such a short time,” Sonko said.
He specifically referred to the issue of the president’s asset declaration. The original proposal required declarations both at the start and at the end of the presidential term, but later reservations were raised. “He himself said when he was a candidate: the President of the Republic must declare his assets upon entry and upon exit. The videos are there. What changed?” Sonko questioned.
He argued that a commitment made to the Senegalese people cannot be altered at will. “On what basis can a single person take the liberty of picking which provisions suit him and which do not? That is unacceptable,” he stated.
These remarks reveal increasingly visible cracks between the two leaders, who together carried Pastef’s political project during the March 2024 presidential election.
