Senegal president Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismisses prime minister Ousmane Sonko

In a significant shift within the executive branch of Sénégal, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially terminated the mandate of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. This high-level dismissal, announced late Friday via a presidential decree, also resulted in the dissolution of the entire government cabinet.

A rift between former allies

The decision to remove the Prime Minister comes after several months of escalating friction between the two leaders. Ousmane Sonko, widely regarded as the political mentor to Bassirou Diomaye Faye, had been leading the government since the administration took office earlier this year. However, persistent internal tensions have finally led to a definitive break in their professional relationship.

The political atmosphere in Dakar has been marked by reports of growing disagreements between the presidency and the prime minister’s office. By ending the functions of the current government, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is expected to restructure his leadership team to address these internal challenges. This move represents a major turning point in Sénégal politics today, as the nation watches how the head of state will navigate this new chapter without his former close collaborator at the helm of the government.
