Sonko demands accountability in judicial proceedings amid infrastructure debates

Prime Minister Sonko challenges justice minister over stalled prosecutions

In a sharp rebuke delivered during a high-level interministerial council meeting on infrastructure, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko questioned the lack of legal consequences for financial mismanagement in government projects. The exchange unfolded as Justice Minister Yassine Fall presented updates on structural deficits within her department and irregularities in construction initiatives.

The Prime Minister waited until the conclusion of Fall’s report before directly addressing her concerns. With visible frustration, Sonko questioned the purpose of ongoing efforts when accountability mechanisms appeared ineffective. « Madam Minister, what exactly is justice accomplishing here? » he remarked. « At times, I question whether our actions serve any real purpose. »

Sonko went further, accusing public officials of operating with impunity despite evidence of financial misconduct. « In this country, people can act with reckless abandon and face no repercussions, » he declared. « The system remains untouched while billions vanish without a single case reaching court. »

The Prime Minister emphasized that the government’s mandate included identifying responsibilities for financial improprieties. « If we continue like this, it’s meaningless. Senegalese citizens shouldn’t keep refinancing the same projects while those responsible flaunt their ill-gotten gains across the nation. »

Highlighting recent judicial scandals, Sonko pressed Fall on the absence of prosecutions. « If justice itself is compromised, what measures are you taking to address these cases? » he challenged, stressing the need for coherent action to maintain public trust.

Justice Minister responds with assurances

Yassine Fall acknowledged structural challenges within her ministry but assured the Prime Minister of her commitment to holding negligent officials accountable. « We are working tirelessly under my leadership to ensure those at fault face consequences, » she stated. « With divine will, we will deliver results that satisfy the Senegalese people. »

Sonko remained unconvinced, reiterating the urgency of transparent investigations. While supporting negotiations for new prison constructions, he insisted on identifying and sanctioning responsible parties—regardless of their political affiliations. « Responsibility must be established, and punishment must follow, » he insisted, even suggesting « judicial sabotage » as a possible explanation for the delays.

The Prime Minister demanded public disclosure of case updates, rejecting claims that legal files belonged to individual magistrates. « These cases belong to all Senegalese citizens, not to magistrates, ministers, or the President. » He hinted at escalating pressure in the coming weeks to ensure transparency and justice.
