Air Sénégal has officially expanded its fleet with the arrival of a brand-new Boeing 737-800, proudly named “Gorée”. Announced in Dakar on September 7, 2026, this strategic acquisition represents a crucial milestone in bolstering the national carrier’s operational capacity and securing the country’s airspace independence.

The purchase was made possible through decisive financial backing from the Senegalese government, coordinated by the Ministry of Land and Air Transport under the leadership of Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye. This investment directly mirrors the national vision championed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to build a powerful aviation sector capable of supporting Senegal’s economic, tourism, and global aspirations.

Advanced capabilities for regional routes

The newly acquired aircraft, a highly versatile single-aisle jet from the Boeing 737 NG family, is optimized for short and medium-haul flights. It will provide the airline with much-needed extra capacity to optimize its flight network. The cabin features a comfortable two-class configuration accommodating 174 passengers: 12 in Business class and 162 in Economy class, all fitted with high-quality Recaro seats. The jet measures 39.5 meters in length with a wingspan of 35.8 meters, and includes three galleys and three restrooms.

Choosing the name “Gorée” carries deep historical significance. The island, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978, stands as a solemn memorial to the transatlantic slave trade and serves as a universal symbol of memory, resilience, and intercultural dialogue. Air Sénégal envisions this modern aircraft as a “flying ambassador” that will proudly carry this powerful legacy across Africa and the globe, connecting the nation’s rich history with its international future and global diaspora.
