Togo advances green aviation with sustainable fuel and new infrastructure
Togo is taking significant steps to modernize its aviation sector through two new agreements designed to spearhead an energy transition and bolster the fuel supply infrastructure at Lomé’s international airport. The partnerships, established between the Société aéroportuaire de Lomé-Tokoin (SALT) and the state-owned enterprise T-OIL, pave the way for the gradual introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in the country. A key part of the plan also involves the construction of a new 1,500 cubic meter Jet A1 storage tank on the airport grounds.
These strategic conventions were formalized in Lomé during the 2026 Annual Assembly of African Airports and Airlines (AATCE). The initiative is a cornerstone of a wider national policy aimed at decarbonizing air travel while simultaneously enhancing the resilience of the sector’s energy infrastructure.
Through this move, Togolese authorities are signaling their determination to cement Lomé’s status as a key regional aviation hub. The adoption of sustainable aviation fuel is also a direct response to the increasing global pressure on the aeronautics industry to reduce carbon emissions. Airlines and airports worldwide are facing calls to integrate cleaner energy solutions into their operations.
The construction of the new Jet A1 storage facility is expected to significantly improve the security of fuel supply for aircraft operating out of the Togolese capital. This enhancement will also support the anticipated growth in air traffic throughout the sub-region.
This forward-looking dynamic aligns with the vision of President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, who has identified infrastructure modernization and energy transition as central pillars of national development. The project has received the full backing of the ministers responsible for Transport and for Energy and Mineral Resources, who have reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering a more sustainable, resilient, and interconnected air transport system for the nation.
