Togo partners with french institution to launch elite agronomy program
Togo unveils cutting-edge agronomy training program in partnership with French experts
Lomé has taken a significant stride in higher education with the launch of a strategic collaboration between the Scientific Group SIGMA and France’s École Supérieure des Agricultures (ESA). The partnership, formalized in the Togolese capital, marks a new era in agricultural education for the country and West Africa.
Beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year, the initiative will introduce a specialized Scientific Preparatory Class tailored for high school science graduates. This program is designed to equip students with the advanced knowledge and skills required to pursue careers as agronomy engineers, addressing critical needs in Togo’s agricultural sector and beyond.
Building tomorrow’s agricultural leaders
The curriculum focuses on preparing students to tackle pressing challenges in agriculture, food security, and environmental sustainability across the region. By blending theoretical instruction with practical applications, the program aims to cultivate professionals capable of driving innovation in farming practices, food production, and ecological stewardship.
Dr. Beaugrain Domongue, Director of Development and Foresight at SIGMA, emphasized the program’s role in bridging scientific excellence with agricultural progress. “Our goal is to merge high-level education with the realities of the land, empowering farmers with innovative solutions while reinforcing our food sovereignty,” he stated.
French expertise meets Togolese ambition
The ESA will contribute its world-class pedagogical resources, including updated training modules, faculty development programs, and active participation in academic evaluations. A highlight of the partnership is the annual Summer Workshop at the ESA campus in Angers, offering students international exposure and hands-on learning in a globally recognized institution.
The curriculum prioritizes key disciplines such as agronomy, environmental science, food systems, and agri-tech innovation, leveraging interactive teaching methods renowned for fostering critical thinking and problem-solving.
A five-year journey to agronomy excellence
The program spans five years, divided into two phases. The first two years focus on strengthening foundational sciences—biology, chemistry, mathematics—and introducing core agricultural principles like crop science, livestock management, and nutrition. Upon completion, students progress to the three-year engineering cycle at ESA, culminating in a prestigious agronomy engineering diploma.
SIGMA: Pioneering scientific education in Togo
Established in 2018, the SIGMA Scientific Group has emerged as a leading institution in Togo, offering secondary, preparatory, and higher education programs. With a mission to cultivate the next generation of scientists, engineers, researchers, and policymakers, SIGMA champions a pedagogy rooted in rigor, innovation, global engagement, and academic distinction.
The new agronomy program underscores SIGMA’s commitment to addressing Africa’s evolving agricultural landscape and strengthening food security through world-class education.
