Two civilians killed, one kidnapped in terrorist attack in Niger’s Ayorou
Fresh violence has once again struck the Tillabéri region. On the morning of Friday, 12 June 2026, around 7 a.m., the village of Goungo Koré, located in the Ayorou commune, was assaulted by an armed terrorist group. The attack left two civilians dead.
Double murder and a targeted abduction
The assailants stormed the settlement, opening fire and spreading panic among the residents. Two villagers were killed instantly. During the raid, the terrorists also kidnapped a man named Boubacar Yabilan, a native of the neighbouring village of Doulsou Gourma. Notably, this is the second time Yabilan has been abducted by armed groups – he was previously seized in 2023.
Provocation strategy thwarted by local militias
Early assessments suggest this was not a simple looting operation. Instead, it appears to have been a deliberate and highly strategic provocation. The attackers aimed to lure the self-defence militias of Goungo Koré, Séno and Kandadji away from their defensive positions, forcing them into open combat. The local defence groups, however, showed restraint. By refusing to take the bait and holding their ground, they avoided a direct confrontation that could have been deadly and further destabilised the area.
High security tension in the region
The Ayorou commune lies within the volatile ‘three borders’ zone where Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso meet – a major hotspot for jihadist activity in the Sahel. This latest attack underscores the persistent vulnerability of civilian populations and the critical, though complex, role of community-based security initiatives in the face of a protracted war of attrition waged by terrorist groups.
