Upla condemns Mali’s ban on jeune afrique magazine
The Union of African Free Press Journalists (UJPLA) has voiced strong condemnation and deep concern over Mali’s decision to ban the sale and distribution of Jeune Afrique magazine nationwide.
According to the UJPLA, this action represents a serious violation of press freedom, freedom of expression, and the fundamental right of Malians to access pluralistic, unbiased, and independent information.
Jeune Afrique is a long-standing, pan-African publication renowned for its contributions to democratic discourse, political analysis, and socio-economic debates across the continent. The magazine’s ban sets a dangerous precedent and signals an authoritarian drift that contradicts Mali’s international human rights commitments.
The UJPLA emphasizes that press freedom is not a favor granted by authorities but an inalienable right enshrined in international conventions, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The organization outlines its demands as follows:
- Firmly condemn Mali’s arbitrary decision to ban Jeune Afrique;
- Urge immediate reversal of the sales prohibition;
- Call on Malian authorities to prioritize dialogue, transparency, and respect for fundamental freedoms;
- Encourage human rights and press freedom organizations to unite against this oppressive measure.
Reaffirming its unwavering commitment to press freedom and journalist safety across Africa, the UJPLA remains steadfast in defending these principles.
