“We saw everything burn”: traders in shock as fire ravages Kpalimé market

It was a devastating night for traders at the grand market of Kpalimé, known as the Château market, in the heart of Kloto 1 commune. In the early hours of Monday, September 7, 2026, a massive fire broke out, leaving behind a trail of destruction but, fortunately, no loss of life.

Eyewitnesses describe scenes of panic as flames erupted just after midnight in the relocation area of the market. With wooden structures and highly flammable goods scattered across the stalls, the blaze escalated quickly, leaping from one stand to another and consuming nearby sheds before firefighters could even arrive on the scene.

Rapid response prevents worse catastrophe

Upon receiving the alert, fire services rushed to the site, supported by local police and the National Agency for Civil Protection. Their coordinated efforts managed to contain the inferno during the night, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the commercial precinct.

Thanks to their swift action, the damage, although significant, was limited to the affected zone. Still, the aftermath has left many merchants grappling with overwhelming losses.

No casualties but heavy material losses

According to preliminary assessments by rescue teams, no human lives were lost, and no injuries were reported. However, the material toll is severe: multiple sheds have been destroyed, along with substantial stocks of food products, textiles, and various business equipment that went up in flames.

One trader, who wished to remain anonymous, told our reporter: “We saw everything burn. Years of hard work vanished in minutes.” Another lamented the loss of essential goods, questioning how they would recover without insurance or immediate support.

Investigation and support efforts underway

Local authorities have opened an inquiry to determine the exact origin of the fire. Meanwhile, the National Agency for Civil Protection and municipal services are working diligently to register the affected traders and calculate the precise financial impact.

As the community rallies together, calls are growing for increased fire safety measures in the market to prevent such a tragedy from recurring.
