A french national’s detention in Senegal highlights strict homosexuality laws
A French engineer, approximately thirty years old, has been held in detention in Senegal since his arrest on February 14. He faces accusations including “acts against nature” and “attempted HIV transmission.” This situation unfolds as Senegal recently reinforced its penalties for homosexual relations.
A French citizen has been incarcerated in Senegal since February 14, facing charges that notably include “acts against nature.” This arrest occurs in a nation where penalties for homosexual relationships have recently been intensified, a diplomatic representative confirmed on Friday, May 15.
The individual, an engineer in his thirties residing in Dakar, was apprehended on February 14, 2026. His charges encompass “acts against nature, criminal association, money laundering, and attempted HIV transmission,” as part of a series of arrests during that period.
French diplomatic officials in Dakar are closely monitoring the situation of their national. The consulate has conducted four visits to provide consular protection and maintains consistent communication with his family. Similar efforts are being made by the Quai d’Orsay in Paris.
Escalation of arrests for alleged homosexuality
Senegal, a predominantly Muslim country, enacted new legislation in early March that now mandates prison sentences ranging from five to ten years for homosexual relations. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye formally promulgated this law on March 31.
This legal development unfolds amidst a rising tide of homophobia throughout the nation and a series of detentions targeting individuals suspected of homosexuality. In Senegal, same-sex relationships are widely viewed as a deviation, and the increased severity of their repression represents a long-standing and politically advantageous commitment from the current ruling administration.
France has consistently affirmed its dedication to the universal and indivisible respect for human rights. It also reiterates its commitment to the global decriminalization of homosexuality, the protection of LGBT+ individuals’ rights, and the vigorous fight against all forms of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
