A landmark 40-megawatt power plant gifted by Algeria to Chad signals a deeper strategic partnership between Algiers and N’Djamena.

The inauguration ceremony, led by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb alongside his Chadian counterpart Allamaye Halina in N’Djamena, marks the symbolic groundbreaking of a project designed to strengthen energy ties between the two nations.

Sonelgaz International spearheads the energy infrastructure project

This initiative reflects Algeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s leadership. Technical discussions during the ceremony outlined engineering specifications, implementation phases, and operational outlook, highlighting how the plant will bolster energy security for N’Djamena and surrounding regions. Equipped with gas turbines, the facility aims to meet rising electricity demand and stabilize supply across Chad’s capital and adjacent areas.

The project falls under the purview of Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, with Sonelgaz International—part of the Sonelgaz Group—handling execution. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, representing Algeria at the event, emphasized the project’s strategic significance as one of the first tangible outcomes of high-level agreements between the two countries.

Solidarity and shared growth drive the partnership

In his address, Ghrieb underscored Algeria’s dedication to fostering cooperation and solidarity with African nations, particularly Chad. He framed the plant as a testament to President Tebboune’s vision for Africa, stating that «this project embodies the unwavering political will binding our two brotherly nations and elevates our ties to a robust strategic partnership rooted in mutual interests, shared development, and genuine solidarity.»

He added that President Tebboune remains deeply committed to strengthening fraternal bonds and consolidating bilateral cooperation, envisioning «a more integrated and prosperous African continent.» The initiative represents a concrete step forward in the renewed momentum following the Chadian president’s official visit to Algeria in April 2026, which yielded ambitious cooperation agreements across key sectors.

Regional stability through African-led solutions

The Prime Minister highlighted the project’s broader African significance, asserting that «effective African cooperation must translate into tangible development that directly benefits our citizens.» He championed a vision of Africa defined by «proactive solidarity, impactful initiatives, productive investments, and partnerships that generate wealth for African people.»

Ghrieb noted that this approach aligns with a broader continental integration strategy. He pointed to transformative infrastructure like the Trans-Saharan Highway, fiber-optic interconnections, and enhanced air transport and logistics as critical to unlocking landlocked regions and fostering trade and investment flows.

African solutions for African challenges

Addressing regional dynamics, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Algeria and Chad’s alignment on continental issues, stressing «our determination to coordinate on regional and continental matters.» He emphasized a shared belief in «the unity of our peoples’ destinies and the need to advance African solutions to African problems while respecting state sovereignty.»

Ghrieb concluded by reasserting Algeria’s commitment to supporting Chad’s development, declaring: «On behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, I renew Algeria’s pledge to stand by the Republic of Chad in strengthening our bilateral partnership for the shared progress, stability, and prosperity of our two nations.»
