Bénin and Niger are taking concrete steps to restore normal relations following a series of diplomatic engagements, including the recent visit of Bénin’s newly elected President Romuald Wadagni to Niamey on June 2.

The meeting held in Cotonou on June 20 brought together high-ranking officials from both nations. Among them were Niger’s State Minister of Security, General Mohamed Toumba, and Bénin’s Minister for African Integration, Adjadi Bakari, who jointly led discussions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Key areas of focus included security protocols, defense cooperation, diplomatic frameworks, legal considerations, and economic collaboration. The closed-door discussions, which began on June 20, continued into the following day.

The anticipated reopening of the Bénin-Niger border hinges on finalizing agreements related to defense protocols, cross-border security measures, and customs regulations.
