The Federal Republic of Nigeria rolled out the red carpet for Beninese President Romuald Wadagni on June 1, welcoming him at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport. This marked the first international visit of the newly elected Beninese leader, underscoring the deep ties between the two West African nations.

Airport formalities were handled by Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, who personally received President Wadagni at the presidential pavilion. Officials from both sides emphasized that the ceremonial welcome reflected Nigeria’s strong commitment to fostering renewed cooperation with Benin.

Following the reception, President Wadagni held intensive talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja. The leaders engaged in wide-ranging discussions covering critical areas of bilateral collaboration—security, trade, and regional integration—conducted in an atmosphere of openness and shared strategic vision, as confirmed by Benin’s government.

Benin and Nigeria have long maintained interdependent relationships across economic, cultural, and security spheres. This visit is seen as a pivotal moment to revitalize the Cotonou-Abuja partnership axis, steering it toward fresh opportunities and mutual growth, according to Beninese authorities.

The visit also signals a defining shift in Benin’s foreign policy direction under President Wadagni’s leadership. At 49, he champions a foreign policy rooted in proximity diplomacy, proactive engagement, and a steadfast drive to reinforce collective sovereignty across West Africa.

As West Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria plays a crucial role in Benin’s economic stability, serving as its top trading partner. Benin’s economy, heavily reliant on agriculture and service sectors, depends on seamless access to Nigerian markets and infrastructure.
