The official handover ceremony in Bénin reached its climax as newly elected President Romuald Wadagni took the oath of office before a packed audience at the Palais des congrès in Cotonou.

The solemn proceedings began with the Constitutional Court declaring the presidential election results, following which Wadagni, dressed in a dark blue suit and tie, ascended the podium. With his right hand raised, he swore to « uphold and defend the Constitution » under penalty of law, a pledge met by a thunderous 12-gun salute.

Minutes later, he was formally invested as Grand Master of the national orders. The Chief of Staff then presented him with the national flag, symbolizing the transfer of leadership. In his inaugural address, Wadagni pledged unwavering dedication to serving Bénin with integrity, courage, and consistency, vowing to uphold the rule of law and fundamental freedoms for all citizens.

On economic growth, he promised a development model « that benefits every household » across the country. Addressing national security, he declared that Bénin would maintain a firm stance against any threats to its stability, including the rising tide of terrorism sweeping across the Sahel.

Strengthening ties with regional partners

The ceremony drew dignitaries from across Africa and beyond. Among the honored guests were former Bénin presidents Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi, alongside 16 foreign delegations. Notable attendees included the French Minister for International Partnerships and representatives from neighboring nations such as Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Niger—a country with which relations remain delicate.

Emphasizing the importance of regional solidarity, Wadagni underscored that « we are bound together by necessity » and called for deeper cooperation to address shared challenges, from security to economic integration.
