border security breach thwarted in Benin’s kassouala

A routine border patrol in northeastern Bénin led to the interception of a migrant convoy on Tuesday morning. Police officers stationed at the Okpara bridge in the Kassouala district stopped 24 individuals, including a 20-year-old Bénin citizen suspected of orchestrating the clandestine journey.

The interception occurred just after 8:30 AM during a standard border checkpoint. Among the 24 detained individuals—all Nigerian nationals of Hausa ethnicity—authorities discovered a young Beninese man believed to be the group’s guide. Their intended destination? Illegal gold panning sites across the border in Burkina Faso.

The migrants, who claimed to have departed from Tchaki in Nigeria before spending the night in Boukouro, a Beninese village near the frontier, all carried valid identification documents. However, investigators are probing deeper into the circumstances surrounding their journey, with particular focus on the suspected organizer—a 20-year-old Beninese national from Bassila, currently residing in Parakou.

All detainees were transferred to the Tchaourou police station for questioning. An ongoing investigation aims to uncover whether this case points to a larger, organized migrant smuggling network operating in the region.
