Burkina Faso declares two EU diplomats persona non grata

The Burkina Faso government has issued a persona non grata order against two European Union diplomats stationed in Ouagadougou. This decision, announced on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, affects the deputy head of the EU delegation responsible for press and information, as well as the EU program manager.

Both diplomats have been given 72 hours to leave the country starting from the date of notification. Authorities have not provided any official explanation regarding the reasons behind this expulsion.

This latest development occurs shortly after Burkina Faso summoned the EU ambassador and head of delegation, Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi, on June 22. The government protested against a resolution passed by the European Parliament, which it described as “hostile” and an “interference in the country’s internal affairs.”

The deteriorating relations between Burkina Faso and the European Union come at a time of shifting diplomatic alliances in the Sahel region.
